1st century BCE · 1st century BCE

Ariovistus was a Germanic leader of the Suebi who crossed the Rhine into Gaul around 70 BCE as an ally of the Sequani and Arverni against the Aedui. After defeating the Aedui he settled his people on Sequanian land, and in 59 BCE Rome recognised him as king and friend. In 58 BCE Julius Caesar defeated him in Alsace and drove his army back across the Rhine.
