Arius

c. 256–336 · 4th century

Arius was a Christian priest of Alexandria whose teaching that the Son was created by God the Father, and subordinate to him, caused a long controversy in the church. The Council of Nicaea condemned his views in 325, but Arianism remained influential for decades and was adopted by the Goths and other Germanic peoples. His chief opponent was Athanasius of Alexandria.
