Arturo Prat

1848–1879 · 19th century

Arturo Prat was a Chilean naval officer and lawyer who commanded the old corvette Esmeralda at the Battle of Iquique on 21 May 1879, during the War of the Pacific. When the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar rammed his ship, he leapt aboard the enemy vessel and was killed. His sacrifice made him Chile's greatest naval hero, and 21 May is commemorated as Navy Day.
