1879 · 19th century · Part of the War of the Pacific

The Battle of Iquique was a naval battle fought on 21 May 1879 off the port of Iquique during the War of the Pacific. The Peruvian ironclad Huáscar sank the old Chilean corvette Esmeralda, whose captain Arturo Prat was killed while boarding the enemy ship, while the Peruvian ironclad Independencia ran aground nearby.
