Beagle Channel

The Beagle Channel is a strait in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago at the southern tip of South America, named after HMS Beagle. Sovereignty over the islands at its eastern end was disputed between Chile and Argentina and brought them close to war in 1978. Papal mediation averted the conflict and led to the Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1984.
