Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
The assassination of Abraham Lincoln took place on 14 April 1865, five days after the surrender of the main Confederate army, when the actor and Confederate sympathiser John Wilkes Booth shot the president at Ford's Theatre in Washington; Lincoln died the next morning. It was part of a conspiracy that also gravely wounded Secretary of State William Seward. Lincoln's successor, Andrew Johnson, pursued a lenient policy towards the defeated South that brought him into bitter conflict with Congress over Reconstruction.
