Assam
Assam is a state of north-eastern India centred on the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys, with its capital at Dispur in Guwahati. Ruled by the Ahom kingdom for about six centuries from the 13th, it was overrun by Burma in 1817–26 and ceded to the British East India Company by the Treaty of Yandabo in 1826. It is known for its tea plantations, its oil fields and the Assamese language.
