Mylliem State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Mylliem

One of the largest Khasi states of the Meghalaya plateau, within whose territory the British built Shillong, capital of Assam and later of Meghalaya.

Origins

Hima Mylliem was one of the Khasi chiefdoms that emerged on the Shillong plateau; their origins are known from oral tradition, and the register's start date is approximate.

Rule and society

Like other Khasi states it was headed by a Syiem chosen from a royal clan by the heads of the leading clans, with succession passing through the female line, typically to a sister's son. Local markets and village councils (dorbar) were central to its life. Shillong, founded as a British station in the 1860s, lay inside Mylliem's lands.

Decline and legacy

Mylliem signed agreements with the British in the 19th century and acceded to India in 1948, joining Assam. Since 1972 it has been part of Meghalaya, where its Syiem keeps a customary role.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
