Meghalaya
Meghalaya is a state in north-eastern India, formed from Assam in 1972, with its capital at Shillong. Its hills are home mainly to the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo peoples, who follow matrilineal descent, and include some of the wettest places on earth, such as Mawsynram and Sohra. Its traditional Khasi chiefs, the Syiems, keep customary roles alongside the state government.
