Syiem

Also known as Siem

Syiem is the title of the chief of a traditional Khasi state, or hima, in the hills of present-day Meghalaya, India. The Syiem was chosen from a royal clan by the heads of the leading clans, with succession passing through the female line, usually to a sister's son. The Syiems signed agreements with the British in the 19th century and keep customary roles today.
