Sylhet
Sylhet is a city in north-eastern Bangladesh on the Surma river and the centre of Sylhet Division. Conquered by Muslim forces from Bengal in 1303, it is known for the shrine of the Sufi saint Shah Jalal, and under British rule it became a centre of tea growing. In 1947 a referendum joined most of the district to East Pakistan, and many Sylhetis later emigrated to Britain.
