Avarua
Avarua is the capital of the Cook Islands, on the north coast of Rarotonga. It grew around the London Missionary Society station and the seat of the Makea ariki, whose leading title holder was regarded by Europeans as the island's monarch. It became the seat of the British resident in 1891 and of the New Zealand administration after 1901, and it is now the islands' main port and town.
