Babad Tanah Jawi
The Babad Tanah Jawi ('Chronicle of the Land of Java') is a group of Javanese court chronicles in verse, written down in several versions from the late seventeenth century onwards at the courts of Kartasura and Surakarta. They trace the kings of Java from legendary origins through Majapahit and Demak to the rulers of Mataram, presenting Mataram as their legitimate heir. They are a principal, if partly legendary, source for Javanese history.
