Balthasar von Dernbach

1548–1606 · 16th century

Balthasar von Dernbach was prince-abbot of Fulda from 1570 to 1606. A determined Counter-Reformer, he brought in the Jesuits and pressed his Protestant subjects to return to Catholicism, which led the chapter and the knights to depose him in 1576. Restored by imperial judgement in 1602, he resumed his campaign until his death.
