William I of the Netherlands

1772–1843 · 19th century · Also known as King William I of the Netherlands

William I was the first King of the Netherlands, reigning from 1815 to 1840. A son of William V, the last stadtholder, and great-grandson of William IV of Orange-Nassau-Diez, he ruled the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, including present-day Belgium. He promoted trade, canals and industry, but the Belgian Revolution of 1830 split his kingdom, and he abdicated in 1840.
