Ban Kulin

r. c. 1180–1204 · 12th century · Also known as Kulin of Bosnia

Ban Kulin ruled Bosnia from about 1180 to 1204, nominally under Hungarian and Byzantine overlordship but in practice independently, and his reign was later remembered as a golden age. His charter of 1189 granting free trade to the merchants of Ragusa is one of the oldest state documents in a South Slavic language. Accused of protecting heretics, he and his nobles publicly abjured heresy at Bilino Polje in 1203.
