Srebrenica
Srebrenica is a town in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina near the Drina, whose name comes from the silver mined there. From the 14th century its mines, worked by Saxon miners and controlled by Ragusan merchants, made it one of the richest places in the Balkans, contested by Bosnia, Serbia and Hungary until the Ottoman conquest. In July 1995 Bosnian Serb forces killed more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys there, an act ruled genocide by international courts.
