Bananagate
Bananagate was a bribery scandal of 1975 in which the US company United Brands, formerly the United Fruit Company, was found to have paid 1.25 million dollars to Honduran officials to secure a reduction of an export tax on bananas. The revelations, which followed the suicide of the company's chairman Eli Black in New York, led to the overthrow of the Honduran military ruler Oswaldo López Arellano in April 1975.
