Liberal Party (UK)

1859–1988 · 19th century

The Liberal Party was one of the two major parties of the United Kingdom from its formation in 1859, out of the Whigs, Radicals and Peelites, until the First World War. Under William Gladstone and later H. H. Asquith and David Lloyd George it championed free trade, Irish Home Rule, a wider franchise and social reform. Overtaken by the Labour Party after 1918, it merged into the Liberal Democrats in 1988.
