Band-e Amir (dam)

10th century · 10th century · Also known as Band-e Amir

Band-e Amir is a dam on the Kur River in Fars, Iran, north-east of Shiraz, built in the 10th century for the Buyid ruler Adud al-Dawla. Its masonry weir raised the river to irrigate the surrounding plain and drove water-mills. Admired by medieval geographers, it remained in use for centuries and gave its name to the stretch of river below it.
