1833 · 19th century · Also known as Basel-Country

Basel-Landschaft is a canton of north-western Switzerland, with its capital at Liestal. It was formed in 1833 when the rural districts, after armed conflict with the city of Basel over political rights, broke away from the canton of Basel. Its voters have repeatedly rejected proposals to reunite with Basel-Stadt, most recently in 2014.
