Basel-Stadt is a canton of north-western Switzerland made up of the city of Basel and the two small communes of Riehen and Bettingen, on the Rhine where Switzerland meets France and Germany. It was created in 1833 when the rural districts split off as Basel-Landschaft. It is the smallest Swiss canton by area and a centre of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
