Basil Boioannes
Basil Boioannes was the Byzantine catepan, or governor, of Italy from 1017 to 1027. In 1018 he crushed the rebellion of Melus of Bari and his Norman mercenaries at the second Battle of Cannae. He strengthened Byzantine rule in Apulia by founding fortified towns such as Troia and extended imperial influence towards Campania, making his governorship the high point of Byzantine power in southern Italy.
