Battle of Amoaful

1874 · 19th century · Part of the Third Anglo-Ashanti War

The Battle of Amoaful was fought on 31 January 1874 in the forest south of Kumasi, when a British expedition under Sir Garnet Wolseley defeated a large Asante army. The British advanced in a square through dense bush, using artillery and rockets, and the victory opened the road to Kumasi, which they occupied and burned days later.
