Battle of Ashdown

871 · 9th century

The Battle of Ashdown was fought on 8 January 871 between the West Saxons, led by King Æthelred I and his brother Alfred, and the Great Heathen Army of the Danes. Alfred's attack uphill began a West Saxon victory in which the Danish king Bagsecg and five earls were killed. The site, on the Berkshire Downs, is not known exactly, and the Danes won further victories later that year.
