Battle of Bathys Ryax

872 or 878 · 9th century

The Battle of Bathys Ryax was fought in central Anatolia between the Byzantine army of Emperor Basil I and the Paulicians of Tephrike, probably in 872 or 878. The Byzantines surprised the Paulician army as it withdrew from a raid into imperial territory, and its leader Chrysocheir was killed. The defeat broke Paulician power, and Tephrike fell to the Byzantines soon afterwards.
