Battle of Berea

1852 · 19th century

The Battle of Berea was fought on 20 December 1852 on the Berea plateau in present-day Lesotho between British forces under Sir George Cathcart and the Basotho of Moshoeshoe I. Cathcart's punitive expedition to seize cattle met stiff resistance, and the fighting was indecisive. Moshoeshoe then sent a conciliatory letter, allowing Cathcart to withdraw and claim success.
