Battle of Boomplaats
The Battle of Boomplaats was fought on 29 August 1848 in the south of the present-day Free State of South Africa, between British troops under Sir Harry Smith and Boer forces under Andries Pretorius. The British victory confirmed the annexation of the Orange River Sovereignty, but Britain withdrew from the territory in 1854, allowing the Orange Free State to be founded.
