Battle of Bonza

1539 · 16th century · Part of the Spanish conquest of the Muisca

The Battle of Bonza was fought in 1539 near Duitama in present-day Boyacá, Colombia, between Spanish forces under Baltasar Maldonado, with Indian auxiliaries, and the warriors of Tundama, a Muisca ruler who had refused to submit. Tundama's army was defeated after fierce resistance, and he was later killed. The battle marked the end of organised Muisca military resistance to the Spanish conquest.
