Battle of Bir Hakeim

1942 · 20th century · Part of the Second World War

The Battle of Bir Hakeim was fought in the Libyan desert from 26 May to 11 June 1942, as part of the Battle of Gazala. A Free French brigade under General Marie-Pierre Koenig held the desert fort against German and Italian forces under Erwin Rommel for over two weeks before breaking out. The defence delayed the Axis advance and gave Free France its first major feat of arms.
