Battle of Calderón Bridge

1811 · 19th century · Part of the Mexican War of Independence

The Battle of Calderón Bridge was fought on 17 January 1811 near Guadalajara during the Mexican War of Independence. A disciplined royalist army of about 6,000 under Félix María Calleja routed the much larger but poorly armed insurgent host of Miguel Hidalgo and Ignacio Allende, helped by the explosion of an insurgent ammunition wagon. The defeat led to Hidalgo's capture and execution later that year.
