Félix María Calleja

1753–1828 · 19th century · Also known as Félix María Calleja del Rey

Félix María Calleja was a Spanish army officer who led royalist forces against the Mexican insurgents from 1810. He defeated Miguel Hidalgo's much larger army at the Bridge of Calderón in January 1811 and besieged José María Morelos at Cuautla in 1812. As Viceroy of New Spain from 1813 to 1816 he pursued a harsh counter-insurgency that brought the rebellion close to defeat.
