Diego de Vargas

1643–1704 · 17th century

Diego de Vargas was a Spanish governor of New Mexico who led its reconquest after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. In 1692 he reoccupied Santa Fe largely without bloodshed, and in 1693 he returned with settlers, retaking the city by force when its Pueblo occupants resisted. He was governor again from 1703 and died on campaign against the Apache in 1704.
