Pueblo Revolt

1680 · 17th century

The Pueblo Revolt was a coordinated uprising of the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico against Spanish rule that began on 10 August 1680. Led by Popé, the rebels killed about 400 colonists and 21 Franciscan friars, besieged Santa Fe and forced the survivors to retreat south to El Paso. The Pueblos remained independent of Spain until Diego de Vargas reconquered the province from 1692.
