New Mexico
New Mexico is a region of the south-western United States, today a US state. Spanish colonisation began under Juan de Oñate in 1598, and the province, centred on Santa Fe from about 1610, was the northern frontier of New Spain. The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 drove the Spaniards out until Diego de Vargas returned in 1692. It passed to Mexico in 1821 and to the United States in 1848.
