New Netherland Company

1614–1618 · 17th century

The New Netherland Company was a Dutch trading company chartered by the States General in 1614 with a monopoly of the fur trade in North America between latitudes 40 and 45 degrees north. It built Fort Nassau on Castle Island near present-day Albany. Its charter expired in 1618, and from 1621 the trade passed to the Dutch West India Company, which organised the colony of New Netherland.
