Flushing, Queens

1645 · 17th century · Also known as Vlissingen

Flushing is a neighbourhood in the New York City borough of Queens, founded under Dutch rule in 1645 as the English settlement of Vlissingen. In 1657 its residents signed the Flushing Remonstrance, protesting against Director-General Peter Stuyvesant's persecution of Quakers, an early American statement of religious freedom. It is now home to one of the largest Chinese and Korean communities in New York.
