Albany, New York
Albany is the capital of the state of New York, on the west bank of the Hudson River. It grew from the Dutch fur-trading post of Fort Orange, built in 1624 near an earlier post of 1614, and the village of Beverwijck. After the English conquest of 1664 it was renamed after James, Duke of York and Albany; it was chartered as a city in 1686 and became the state capital in 1797.
