New Orleans

1718 · 18th century

New Orleans is a port city on the Mississippi River near its mouth, founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. It became the capital of French Louisiana, passed to Spain in 1763 and returned briefly to France before the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Its Creole culture and river trade made it the commercial centre of the Gulf coast.
