Commandancy General of the Internal Provinces
Origins
Under the reforms of José de Gálvez, Charles III separated the northern provinces of New Spain from the viceroy's direct control in 1776 to strengthen frontier defence against the Apache and Comanche. Teodoro de Croix became the first commandant general, with his seat at Arizpe in Sonora, later moved to Chihuahua.
Rule and society
The commandant general held military, political and judicial authority over Nueva Vizcaya, Sonora and Sinaloa, the Californias, New Mexico, Coahuila and Texas, and at times Nuevo León and Nuevo Santander. The command rested on a chain of presidios, mounted soldiers and alliances or peace treaties with indigenous groups, notably the 1786 Comanche peace in New Mexico. It was repeatedly reorganised, divided into eastern and western commands and placed back under the viceroy.
Decline and legacy
The command continued, in eastern and western halves after 1813, until Mexican independence in 1821. Its territories became states and territories of Mexico, and much of its north, including Texas, New Mexico and California, passed to the United States in 1848.
