1720–1787 · 18th century · Also known as José de Gálvez y Gallardo, Marquis of Sonora

José de Gálvez was a Spanish official who, as visitor-general of New Spain from 1765 to 1771, drove the Bourbon reforms there: a tobacco monopoly, tighter tax collection, the expulsion of the Jesuits and the settlement of Alta California. As Minister of the Indies from 1776 he created the Commandancy General of the Internal Provinces and introduced intendancies across Spanish America.
