Sonora
Sonora is a state of north-western Mexico bordering Arizona, with its capital at Hermosillo. A frontier province of New Spain, it was settled through Jesuit missions and presidios among the Opata, Pima, Yaqui and Seri, and was a base for expeditions to Alta California. In 1853–1854 the American filibuster William Walker tried to seize it as a republic.
