Santa Fe de Nuevo México

1598–1848 · 16th century · Also known as Nuevo México

Santa Fe de Nuevo México was a province on the northern frontier of New Spain, founded by Juan de Oñate's colonising expedition in 1598, with its capital at Santa Fe from about 1610. The Pueblo Revolt drove the Spanish out from 1680 to 1692. From 1776 it fell under the Commandancy General of the Internal Provinces; it became a territory of independent Mexico in 1821, was occupied by the United States in 1846 and ceded in 1848.
