Battle of Caishi

1161 · 12th century · Part of the Jin–Song wars

The Battle of Caishi was fought in November 1161 on the Yangtze River near Caishi, in present-day Anhui, between the Southern Song and the Jurchen Jin. The Jin emperor Wanyan Liang, Prince Hailing, tried to cross the river with a large army, but Song warships, including paddle-wheel boats, and gunpowder bombs defeated his fleet. The failure led to his murder by his own officers and secured the Song frontier on the Huai.
