Battle of Cortenuova

1237 · 13th century

The Battle of Cortenuova was fought on 27 November 1237 in Lombardy, when the emperor Frederick II defeated the army of the revived Lombard League led by Milan. The Milanese carroccio, the city's battle-wagon, was captured and sent to Rome as a trophy. The emperor's demand for unconditional surrender stiffened the cities' resistance, however, and he never broke the league.
