Peace of Constance

1183 · 12th century

The Peace of Constance of 1183 ended the long war between the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the Lombard League. The emperor kept his overlordship, but recognised the right of the northern Italian cities to elect their consuls, fortify themselves and exercise many royal rights. It became the founding charter of communal self-government in cities such as Milan and Piacenza.
