685 · 7th century · Also known as Battle of Nechtansmere

The Battle of Dun Nechtain, or Nechtansmere, was fought on 20 May 685 between the Picts under Bridei son of Beli and the Northumbrians under King Ecgfrith, who was killed. The Pictish victory destroyed the Northumbrian army and ended English domination over the Picts and much of northern Britain.
