Battle of Golpejera

1072 · 11th century

The Battle of Golpejera was fought in January 1072 near Carrión de los Condes between the brothers Sancho II of Castile and Alfonso VI of León. Sancho, whose army included Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid, won and captured Alfonso, who was exiled to Muslim Toledo. Sancho took León but was murdered later that year while besieging Zamora, and Alfonso returned to rule both kingdoms.
