Battle of Mantinea (207 BCE)

207 BCE · 3rd century BCE · Part of the First Macedonian War

The Battle of Mantinea of 207 BCE was fought in Arcadia between the Achaean League under Philopoemen and the Spartans under Machanidas. Philopoemen's reformed phalanx held a line behind a ditch while the Spartan mercenaries pursued too far, and Machanidas was killed, reportedly by Philopoemen himself. The victory was the Achaean League's greatest military success.
