Battle of Markellai

792 · 8th century

The Battle of Markellai was fought in 792 near the fortress of Markellai, close to present-day Karnobat in Bulgaria. Khan Kardam defeated the Byzantine emperor Constantine VI, who fled the field, and Byzantium was forced to resume paying tribute to Bulgaria. The same place had seen a Byzantine victory over the Bulgarians under Constantine V in 756.
